A Big Brother and Big Sister Program of Balanced Life Ministry

Side by Side

Honest work in a positive atmosphere opens the door to share God’s love.

Many of our leaders have walked hard roads themselves, and they want to help the next generation avoid the paths some of us have gone down.

Serving one to serve others

Side by Side is the big brother and big sister ministry of Balanced Life Ministry. On Saturdays, young people work side by side with leaders from our program at The Outpost, and those leaders speak into their lives. It has been part of our discipleship ministry for years. Many of our leaders have walked hard roads themselves, and they want to help the next generation avoid the paths some of us have gone down. Honest work in a positive atmosphere opens the door to share God’s love.

Fruits we have seen

Fred, one of our leaders, met a young fisherman below Pickwick Dam and has been mentoring him ever since. Side by Side does not only happen on our property; it happens wherever our people meet a young person who needs someone to walk with them.

Brittany completed our program and brought her oldest son, who was struggling in school and getting into trouble. After working alongside our leaders, he became an honor student

The work is the doorway.

The relationship is the point.

What a Saturday looks like

  1. 1

The parent or grandparent brings the child and signs the permission form.

  2. 2

The child is paired with a program leader as a big brother or big sister.

  3. 3

They work side by side on real tasks around The Outpost, the farm and the ministry.

  4. 4

Along the way, the leader listens, teaches and shares God’s love.

  5. 5

The child goes home with the family at the end of the day.

Where it is going

First Steps

Side by Side is the first step in a growing youth ministry:

Every family can trust that their child is protected. These rules are not optional:

▸  Never alone. No leader is ever alone with a young person out of sight of other adults.

▸  Background checks. Every leader who serves with young people has passed a background check.

▸  Parent permission. A parent or guardian signs a permission form before a child takes part.

▸  Mandated reporting. Tennessee law requires every adult to report suspected child abuse or neglect. Our leaders report to the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services at 1-877-237-0004.
